Elegant glass, a term coined by author Gene Florence, refers to the expensive, handmade, high quality glass introduced in the depression era, as opposed to inexpensive "Depression glass." Some elegant glass was still manufactured in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Elegant glass was manufactured by the better glass companies including Cambridge, Duncan Miller, Fenton, Fostoria, Heisey, Morgantown, New Martinsville, Paden City and Tiffin. Often patterns were etched onto the glass.
The glass was fire-polished and frequently ground and polished.
Elegant glass was sold in high-end department stores and jewelry stores.
Standard references include Elegant Glassware of the Depression Era by Gene Florence (Schroeder Publishing) and Elegant Glass by Debbie and Randy Coe (Schiffer Publishing).
